Jennifer Lawrence is famous for not being afraid to speak her mind. She has no filter about everything from her sex life to feminism and politics, all of which is on display in a new interview with Vogue that’s candid even by the Hunger Games star’s blunt standards.
In between ordering pizza and taking her bra off in front of the reporter, Lawrence got political: “[Kim Davis] makes me embarrassed to be from Kentucky,” she said, referencing the county clerk who became a conservative cause célèbre after being jailed for refusing to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples (the interview took place Sep. 8, the day Davis was released from jail).
According to the Vogue reporter, Davis’ release provoked a “rant” from Lawrence. “All those people holding their crucifixes, which may as well be pitchforks, thinking they’re fighting the good fight,” she said. “I grew up in Kentucky. I know how they are.”
“I was raised a Republican,” Lawrence continued, “but I just can’t imagine supporting a party that doesn’t support women’s basic rights. It’s 2015 and gay people can get married and we think that we’ve come so far, so, yay! But have we? I don’t want to stay quiet about that stuff.”
Lawrence has been outspoken about gender equality before, writing an essay for Lena Dunham’s newsletter Lenny in October about the pay gap between her and male co-stars.
