David Craig Ellis has been in the art game in one way or another since the 90’s and is now making his mark in the field in a big way. As a gallery owner. Located in the hip Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, “Not Another Gallery” is a street level location with an airy, open vibe attracting a diverse audience. A steady stream of tourists pour out from the pedestrian walk of the Williamsburg Bridge just steps from the gallery. We caught up with Ellis at the new space to get an idea of present-day happenings and his future plans.
The current show which opened New Year’s Eve, was David’s idea to showcase the work of his friends and favorite artists and “sort of gather everyone together.” “The Brand New New Year Show” features a potpourri of amazing artists with a pop art feel and beyond. The compiled list features: Don Armbrust, Gina Albano, Caron Bernstein, Richard Bacchus, Daniel Belardinelli, Val Brochard, Rex Costello, Sunny Chapman, David Craig Ellis, James Graham, Eric Ginsburg, Alison Gordy, Anna Gabriel, Friday Jones, Mark Kostabi, Paul Kostabi, Elizabeth Kresch, Darryl LaVare, Samoa Moriki, Karyn Mannix, Dave Manilow, Jeff Mohlenbrok, Gerry Morehead, Sharilyn Neidhardt, Susan Marion Offield, Andrew Ossorguine, Joan Pavelka, Jackson Pawlick, Rick Prol, Johnathan Quinn, Gordon Ramsey, Suzanne Ross, Marny Sadler, Christopher Saucedo, Gabriel J. Shuldiner, Jim Savage, Duane Stapp, Julie Sando, Rew Starr, Ivy Supersonic, Bingo Sanatra, Lori Taschler, Francine Taylor, Gina Volpe, Pat Weinell, Maureen Winzig and Agni Zotis.
The new gallery’s roster of artists includes a wildly talented purebred Boston Terrier, “Jackson Pawlick” who has an acrylic on canvas piece of his own proudly displayed in the show, entitled “Long And Beautiful Journey Home.” Most of the rest of the artists in this specific show are either musicians themselves or somehow connected with the music world.
“I feel a strong connection to music and the way it can be linked to visual art. All day long in the gallery, we’re listening to entire albums from AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, UFO. That way, all the senses get the full treatment.”
The future plans for the gallery include a further expansion of the gift shop to include even more of Ellis’ designs. Tote bags, hats, shirts, bulletproof hoodies, posters, prints, stickers, mugs and a total of thirty books containing thousands of stream of consciousness morning sketches. All the merchandise is also available on the gallery website, www.notanothergallery.com.
Also upcoming in the gallery will be an avant-guarde conceptual installation of a fake coffee shop operated by a mannequin named “Linus.”
With the success and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to “The Brand New New Year Show,” it’s been decided that it should happen every year, opening on New Years Eve. But with just a week left to see this year’s star-studded lineup and if you feel you’d like to experience this rare and unique dual world of the arts, meet me there!
